13:05 30.12.13
PR Newswire
CANTON, Mass., Dec. 30, 2013
CANTON, Mass., Dec. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- New Year's Day is the holiday with the highest number of vehicle thefts, which means there's no better time for LoJack Corporation (NASDAQ: LOJN) to release its top stolen vehicle and equipment recoveries of 2013. From recovering stolen vehicles concealed in shipping containers bound for overseas exportation, to the closing of local "chop shops" and apprehending seasoned criminals involved in international crime rings, these stories demonstrate the proven ability and success of the LoJack® Stolen Vehicle Recovery System within law enforcement agencies across the globe.

And now, the highly-anticipated list of "LoJack's Best Recovery Stories of 2013":
International
LoJack Aids Canadian & U.S. Law Enforcement Agencies in Recovering $3.2 Million in Assets. The international crime ring investigation "Project Windows" was a collaboration between Canadian Law Enforcement, United States Homeland Security and Canadian Border Services, each playing an important role in tracking the group of highly-skilled criminals responsible for stealing luxury vehicles. These sophisticated criminals stole from high-end vehicle dealerships in Canada using falsified documents and fraudulent identities. Once acquired, the thieves would transport the vehicles across the border to United States ports in Newark, N.J. and Baltimore, MD. The vehicles were then placed in cargo containers and shipped overseas to Nigeria and Ghana. The York Regional Police (Toronto, Canada) began the investigation and enlisted the help of LoJack to provide several covert vehicle tracking devices that were placed inside a number of the high-end vehicles. The LoJack devices helped investigators gather intelligence on the suspects and their accomplices, follow the trails of stolen vehicles, establish or confirm their plans, and gather evidence against the members of the organization. In total, investigators were able to recover 89 stolen vehicles worth $3.2 million and arrest 16 suspects with more than 236 charges pending.
Palermo, Italy: LoJack System for Motorcycles Recovery Leads to Chop Shop Bust. Provincial Police of Palermo were notified that a Honda SH scooter worth €60.000 was stolen from the Piazzale Carmelo Lazarus. By tracking the scooter's LoJack System homing signals, two patrol cars tracked the scooter to a van parked right in the Piazza Carmelo Lazarus. The patrolmen removed the steel padlock on the rear hatch and found the reported scooter, as well as 12 other Honda motorcycles with various engine sizes. Of these vehicles, two were intact, while the other 11 were in parts. The patrolmen did a quick search and learned each scooter was reported stolen sometime during January 2013 from various locations in the city of Palermo.
United States:
Audi S8 Fraudulently Purchased from Car Dealership, Recovered
A Sacramento dealership was victimized by a suspect who gave an $18,000 bad check and fraudulent information on his credit application to purchase a 2013 Audi S8 worth approximately $120,000. After attempting to identify and locate the suspect, the dealership filed a theft report of the Audi by fraudulent means. One hour after the stolen vehicle's information was entered into state and national crime information computers by the police, officers with the East Bay Parks Police Air 1 helicopter began receiving signals from the Audi's LoJack System. They radioed the coordinates to ground units and a California Highway Patrol K-9 unit conducted a felony traffic stop and took the driver into custody. The driver was the named suspect of the theft report and had numerous aliases, a lengthy record of fraud and theft, and was an ex-parolee.
Texas Police Hit the Stolen Vehicle Recovery Jackpot Thanks to LoJack System. When a Fort Worth, TX resident noticed her Toyota Camry was missing from her apartment complex parking lot, she immediately contacted local law enforcement to activate her LoJack System and find her car. In this case, police hit the jackpot by not only recovering the Camry, but five other stolen vehicles in a tow station's storage yard.
LoJack System Makes a 'Classic" Recovery
The owner of a 1963 Cadillac Convertible was victimized by thieves, who stole his classic ride from the parking area in Los Angeles, where it was stored. Minutes after being reported stolen, deputies began receiving signals from their LoJack Police Tracking Computers and located the $35,000 car in a residential area, parked and unoccupied.
LoJack System Helps Fairhaven, Mass. Police Track Down Mother/Daughter Crime Team. In August 2013, a mother and daughter tag team started their day by stealing a Lexus that had been involved in a car accident, from an Ocean State Job Lot parking lot in Fairhaven. Little did they know, the Lexus was equipped with a LoJack System and within an hour, police were able to track down the vehicle and arrest the duo who were also carrying hypodermic needles, heroin and $250 worth of stolen jewelry.
Two Busts Involving LoJack System Lead Police to Recovery of Stolen Assets & Large Volumes of Marijuana
In March, deputy constables in the Harris County Precinct 4 were alerted of a stolen pickup equipped with the LoJack System. They tracked the signal to a home in northwest Harris County and identified not only the stolen pickup, but 21 suspected illegal immigrants inside. A search warrant also revealed an elaborate marijuana growing operation. Approximately $500,000 worth of marijuana was being grown.
In June, police officers in Southern California were alerted of a stolen Bobcat Skid Steer worth $30,000 stolen from a construction site. Within the hour, police were able to track the LoJack signal planted on the equipment to a junk salvage yard. Once on-site, the deputies began a sweep of the yard and inside a bunker they also found a loaded .44 caliber hand gun, several shot guns, methamphetamine and a total of 49 large bundles of marijuana. All evidence was seized under a search warrant and a suspect was booked on four felony charges including ex-felon in possession of a firearm, possession of marijuana for resale and receiving stolen property.

LoJack Launches Stolen Vehicle Recovery Network in
New Mexico16:05 18.02.14
PR Newswire
CANTON, Mass., Feb. 18, 2014
CANTON, Mass., Feb. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- LoJack Corporation (NASDAQ: LOJN), a provider of vehicle theft recovery and advanced fleet management solutions, today announced the immediate availability of its Stolen Vehicle Recovery System in New Mexico. The largest law enforcement agencies in New Mexico, including the New Mexico State Police, Santa Fe Police Department and the Albuquerque Police Department, now have the ability to track and recover stolen cars, trucks, SUVs, heavy equipment and motorcycles equipped with a LoJack® Stolen Vehicle Recovery System. The company's expansion into New Mexico was initially requested by the New Mexico Automobile Dealers Association.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20080512/NEM054LOGO )
Albuquerque ranked 20th among the top locations nationwide for vehicle theft with more than 3,700 vehicles stolen in the city's Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in 2012.[1] LoJack's presence in New Mexico will create a more comprehensive LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery Network in the U.S. and enhanced coverage along the Mexican border, a traditional hot spot for vehicle theft.
"We look forward to offering increased safety, security and protection for New Mexico vehicle owners and growing our relationship with New Mexico law enforcement," said Randy L. Ortiz, CEO and President of LoJack. "LoJack is proud to provide law enforcement agencies in New Mexico a turnkey solution to help increase their efforts in combating vehicle theft."
"After only days of service in the New Mexico market, LoJack is already having an impact assisting law enforcement to combat vehicle theft. In fact, the Albuquerque Police Department was alerted to a stolen car equipped with a LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System several hours after they were up and running with our network," reports Patrick Clancy, Vice President of LoJack Law Enforcement. "Serving as a testament to the LoJack System's seamless and instantaneous integration with law enforcement, the vehicle was recovered and returned to its rightful owner within three hours of it being reported stolen. Without the LoJack System and the quick work of the Albuquerque Police Department, this car may have been headed towards the Mexican border or a local chop shop to be sold off in pieces."
In late 2013, LoJack deployed the necessary infrastructure, including radio towers and Police Tracking Computers, in the greater Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces areas. Additionally, LoJack trained authorities at seven law enforcement agencies – at no cost to the agencies or taxpayers – on how to most effectively track and recover vehicles equipped with a LoJack System.
More than 90 percent of stolen cars, trucks and SUVs equipped with the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System have been recovered, with more than 300,000 vehicles and pieces of heavy equipment recovered worldwide, totaling nearly $4 billion in assets. The LoJack System will enable local and regional law enforcement agencies the ability to offer a new level of vehicle theft protection to residents. LoJack created its Stolen Vehicle Recovery System specifically to operate within the processes and procedures of law enforcement, providing a highly effective, turnkey method for system activation and asset recovery.
How the LoJack System Works
The LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System includes a small wireless radio-frequency transceiver that is hidden in a vehicle; and Police Tracking Computers (PTCs) that are installed in police cars, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Once the vehicle is reported stolen to the police, the vehicle's identification number is matched to the LoJack System's registration number by state and national law enforcement computers. After the match, the LoJack System is activated by police, which causes the small, hidden radio transceiver in the vehicle to emit a silent, continuous signal. Law enforcement vehicles and aircraft equipped with LoJack PTCs follow these signals, which can lead to the precise location of the stolen vehicle. The better than 90 percent recovery rate for stolen cars, trucks and SUVs equipped with the LoJack System has translated over the years into nearly $4 billion in recovered assets worldwide.
Availability of the LoJack System

The LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System will be available for sale at participating automobile dealerships in New Mexico. If you are interested in becoming a participating LoJack® Stolen Vehicle Recovery System dealership, please contact John Raber, Regional Vice President of Sales at LoJack, at jraber@lojack.com or call (424) 278-2063. LoJack Announces Dismissal Of All Arbitration Claims Filed By Brazilian Licensee
16:01 13.05.14
PR Newswire
CANTON, Mass., May 13, 2014
CANTON, Mass., May 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- LoJack Corporation (NASDAQ: LOJN) today announced that an arbitration panel has dismissed all claims filed against the Company by Tracker do Brasil LTDA (Tracker), the exclusive licensee of the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery technology in Brazil. In its binding decision, arbitrators from the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association also upheld several of LoJack's counterclaims against Tracker for violating the terms of its license agreement, breaching the implied duty of good faith and fair dealing, and engaging in unfair competition. The panel now will conduct a further hearing to determine the amount of an award of damages owed to LoJack.
LoJack Corporation logo
"This decision is a significant legal victory for LoJack and its shareholders," said Randy Ortiz, LoJack's Chief Executive Officer and President. "The ruling demonstrates that Tracker's claims against the Company were without merit, and allows us to pursue damages against the licensee for the substantial economic harm caused by its breach of contract and unlawful use of our intellectual property and confidential information in the marketplace. Equally important, the decision affirms that the Company acted legally, fairly and in good faith in its dealings at issue with the licensee."
"The management team has worked diligently during the past two years to eliminate the expense and uncertainty of continued litigation," Ortiz said. "With the liability phase of this case now behind us, we look forward to fully concentrating our resources on pursuing strategic business opportunities, including our new telematics solutions, and achieving our long-term performance objectives."
The arbitration case stemmed from a contractual dispute between the parties that began in March 2011. In its 81-page decision, the arbitration panel dismissed all eight of Tracker's claims, including those for intentional misrepresentation, negligent misrepresentation and breach of contract. Tracker had sought $55 million in actual damages, which could have been tripled by the arbitration panel, plus legal fees.
LoJack's counterclaims for breach of contract and breach of implied duty of good faith and fair dealing were upheld in part. The panel ruled that Tracker has been making unauthorized use of LoJack's trademarks, copyrights, technology and other confidential information to advertise, lease, sell or market non-LoJack products, representing them to the public as LoJack products.
The panel found that the unauthorized use of LoJack's intellectual property and confidential information caused LoJack to suffer damages to its reputation, in addition to other damages.
The panel also upheld LoJack's counterclaim that Tracker engaged in unfair competition, ruling that in addition to its use of LoJack's trademarks/trade names and copyrights to sell non-LoJack products, Tracker passed off non-LoJack products as LoJack products. The arbitrators found that this conduct did deceive or likely could deceive customers into believing that they were buying a LoJack product when they were not.
Because Tracker failed to meet its minimum unit purchase requirements for vehicle location units under the license agreement, the panel further concluded that LoJack has the right, based on such failure, to terminate the License Agreement upon the giving of 60 days written notice to Tracker.
"The decision gives us the right to explore other avenues for re-entering the Brazilian market, and we certainly plan to take advantage of the opportunity to assess our options," Ortiz said.

LoJack Corporation Releases 2013 Construction
Equipment Theft & Recovery Report and Infographic
15:30 15.07.14
PR Newswire
CANTON, Mass., July 15, 2014
CANTON, Mass., July 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today LoJack Corporation (NASDAQ: LOJN) released new data originating from the Company's annual Construction Equipment Theft and Recovery in the United States study. LoJack's annual study and accompanying infographic reviews theft trends specific to construction equipment and tools equipped with the LoJack® Stolen Vehicle Recovery System.
LoJack Corporation Logo.
Many equipment owners and rental companies in the United States do not realize that equipment is also one of the biggest targets when it comes to theft. LoJack's 2013 study revealed that:
California remains the highest-ranking state in terms of equipment theft as a result of many active construction projects, as well as an international border with access to major shipping ports.
Light utility vehicles / work trucks and trailers are the most common type of commercial equipment stolen.
Newer equipment models were stolen more often than older equipment – largely due to the fact that the resale value of new equipment is greater. In fact, 46 percent of equipment stolen in 2013 was less than five years old.
In 95 percent of the cases, the stolen equipment was recovered in the same state that the theft was reported.
Construction theft is prevalent in suburban areas, particularly in areas where construction growth is widespread.
"According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, close to $1 billion a year nationwide is lost due to the theft of construction equipment and tools," stated Courtney DeMilio, Associate Vice President of LoJack Commercial. "It has become harder to detect construction theft, and combined with the fact that job sites are often poorly secured, thieves are finding the theft of construction equipment is a lucrative opportunity. As a result, construction and rental businesses are vulnerable and at an increased risk for theft and significant monetary losses as a result of theft."
Additional noteworthy findings from the study of stolen and recovered commercial vehicles equipped with a LoJack device in 2013 include:
States with the highest occurrence of equipment theft were:
California
Texas
Florida
Georgia
New Jersey
North Carolina
Arizona
Maryland
Ohio
(Tie) Colorado, Illinois, New York
Most popular types of stolen and recovered commercial equipment installed with a LoJack device in 2013 :
Light Utility Vehicles / Work Trucks / Trailers
Backhoe Loaders / Skip Loaders / Wheel Loaders
Generators / Air Compressors / Welders / Light Towers
Skid Steers
Other
Mini Excavators
Forklifts
In 2013, 61 percent of the thefts were from the following top manufacturers (note: there were thefts from a total of 51 different manufacturers):
Ford – 31 percent
Bobcat – 12 percent
John Deere – 9 percent
Caterpillar – 5 percent
Case – 4 percent
"LoJack's data reveals that 44 percent of equipment installed with our system was recovered in less than five hours after being reported stolen," DeMilio said. "A swift recovery time of equipment is growing in importance, as modern economic conditions have led construction businesses to increasingly rent rather than purchase equipment. This rising demand for heavy duty rental equipment has made rental companies, and the businesses they supply, vulnerable for not only theft, but significant monetary losses as a result of theft. The LoJack System helps businesses protect themselves and minimize costly damages."
The LoJack System can be installed at the original equipment manufacturer level and helps combat equipment theft across 29 states in the U.S. and in parts of Ontario and Quebec. For additional details on how the LoJack System has successfully recovered millions in stolen equipment, visit the Commercial Theft Blog.com.
About the "2013 LoJack Corporation Study on Construction Equipment Theft"
During the twelve month period from January through December 2013, LoJack tracked theft reports in 27 states where equipment theft was reported and where construction equipment installed with LoJack® Stolen Vehicle Recovery System led police to recover the stolen assets.
