An ongoing boom in Class 8 truck orders continued into March, according to preliminary data gathered by ACT Research Co., with net orders within North American markets rising to 29,200 units last month from 24,300 in February.

“March finished off a second consecutive quarter of elevated Class 8 demand,” said Kenny Vieth, ACT’s president and senior analyst, stressing that preliminary net order figures are subject to revision within roughly plus or minus 5%.
Vieth added that the number of orders in March translates into annual demand of over 300,000 new Class 8 units and noted that industry backlogs, which fell just short of 100,000 units in February, likely rose by another 8,000 to 10,000 units in March.
ACT’s numbers dovetail, if not exceed, projections by truck makers themselves. Ron Huibers, senior vice president-sales and marketing for Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA), recently noted at the 2011 Mid-America Trucking Show that his company believes Class 8 sales should top 220,000 units this year.
Both of Paccar Corp.’s truck manufacturing subsidiaries are also predicting strong growth in medium- and heavy-duty truck sales this year compared to 2010.
Bill Kozek, general manager for Kenworth Truck Co., believes total industry Class 8 sales will exceed 200,000 units this year, a big jump from the 125,000 sold in 2010, as “cautious optimism” among fleet customers spurs them to finally replace aging vehicles.
Bill Jackson, general manager for Peterbilt Motors Co., is projecting total industry Class 8 sales will top 210,000 units this year, with medium-duty sales reaching 50,000 units. To meet demand, Peterbilt has added a second shift to its Denton, TX, production facility and is ramping up its build rate to 100 heavy-duty trucks per day.
Overall, ACT’s Vieth noted that net orders this March were up 159% over the same month last year, representing the largest monthly order intake since May 2006. The question now facing OEMs is whether they can ramp up their production lines fast enough to meet demand.
“With the uptrend firmly established, the question for 2011 now is the industry’s ability to meet demand, instead of whether demand would rise to expectations,” Vieth said. “History shows that production always chases demand at the beginning of the cycle. Unlike orders, the industry needs to work in unison to raise production.”

Burtenbach Der EU-Parlamentarier Markus Ferber hat sich über die aktuelle Situation des schwäbischen Fahrzeugherstellers Kögel informiert. Bei seinem Firmenbesuch in Burtenbach erfuhr er vom Kögel-Management über den seit Wochen steigenden Auftragseingang, die positive Beschäftigungssituation und Produktinnovationen.
Bis Herbst 2010 gab es bei den Burtenbachern noch Kurzarbeit. Inzwischen produzieren 430 Mitarbeiter einschichtig. Wegen der guten Auftragslage, so Kögel-Sprecher Volker Seitz, sollen die Produktion im April auf einen Zwei-Schicht-Betrieb erweitert werden. „Dann kommen 100 überwiegend Leiharbeiter hinzu“, berichtet Seitz. Aktuell werden pro Woche 200 Anhänger in Burtenbach gefertigt. Ziel sind 10000 am Ende des Jahres. „Es sieht gut aus, dass wir das schaffen“, sagt der Kögel-Sprecher.

Europa-Abgeordneter Ferber, der seit vielen Jahren Mitglied im Verkehrsausschuss des Europäischen Parlaments ist, zeigte sich bei seinem Besuch als Fachmann mit Detailkenntnissen über das europäische Transportgewerbe. Inhalt des Gespräches war die EU-weite Harmonisierung der gesetzlichen Rahmenbedingungen für den transeuropäischen Güterverkehr. „Für die kommenden zehn Jahre prognostizieren Experten ein Mehraufkommen zwischen 40 und 60 Prozent im nationalen und internationalen Güterverkehr in Europa. Deswegen ist es zwingend notwendig, auch im Bereich des Straßengüterverkehrs innovative und wirtschaftliche Lösungen zu entwickeln, welche die zusätzlichen Kapazitäten in Zukunft meistern können und zugleich umweltverträglich und sicher sind“, sagte Ferber. Angesichts des zu erwartenden Mehraufkommens im Güterverkehr werde es erforderlich sein, die europäischen Regelungen, die Maße und Gewichte betreffen, anzupassen und zu harmonisieren.
Messeneuheit im Mai
Der Fahrzeughersteller hat hierfür Lösungen parat. Bei der „transport logistic“ in München, die im Mai stattfindet, wird Kögel erstmals einen Mega-Auflieger mit nur vier Meter Gesamthöhe vorstellen. Er bietet drei Meter Ladehöhe. Gezeigt wird in Halle A6 auf Stand 310 auch der bewährt-flexible Kögel Multiplex – ein vielseitiges Container-Chassis. Dabei wurde der Rahmen so optimiert, dass er auch große Nutzlasten bei maximaler Sicherheit zulässt, teilte das Unternehmen mit.
Vor wenigen Tagen war auch Bundestagsabgeordneter Dr. Georg Nüßlein (CSU) zu Gast im Werk in Burtenbach. Der energie- und wirtschaftspolitischer Sprecher der CSU-Landesgruppe informierte sich vor Ort. Inhalt des Gespräches war laut Kögel auch die ökonomischen und ökologischen Vorteile des Kögel Euro Trailers. Der Euro Trailer ist ein um 1,3 Meter verlängerter Auflieger und damit ein innovatives Trailerkonzept, das den Kraftstoffverbrauch und die Kohlendioxid-Emission um bis zu zehn Prozent reduziert.

The March results are a continuation of the strong trend from previous months, reports FTR Associates.
"FTR recently increased our 2011 projections for Class 8 truck sales and the strong order activity in March 2011 supports that decision," said Eric Starks, president of FTR. "The first quarter has been very positive for incoming orders with fleets placing orders primarily for replacement units due to aged equipment.
Orders for added capacity, though, are few with some fleets still looking for good drivers to fill current seats, adds Starks.
"Even in face of growing truck freight, driver supply constraints will continue to restrain plans to add capacity."
Final data for March will be available from FTR later in the month.

The surge in orders for heavy trucks isn't big enough to prevent a shortfall in available truck capacity in 2011 and 2012, according to ACT Research.
"We are starting to accumulate a shortage of freight-hauling capacity," said Steve Tam, vice president of the commercial vehicle sector at ACT Research.
Tam said truck capacity reached "equilibrium" last year after the second quarter surge in inventory restocking and has tightened since.
The Cass Freight Index indicates North American shipment volume increased 6.9 percent in March 2011, a gain of 13.8 percent from March 2010. The year-over-year change in expenditures was 33.6 percent.
The shortfall is "fairly benign at this point," about 10,000 trucks, he said, "but we expect it to continue to grow" to 75,000 trucks by the first quarter of 2012. The shortfall will reach 180,000 trucks by the end of 2012, Tam said.
Truck manufacturers received more than 134,000 Class 8 tractor orders in the last five months alone, receiving 29,200 net orders in March, ACT Research said.
The annualized truck production rate is now at 300,000 units a year. Truck makers built 154,290 Class 8 tractors in 2010, a 30 percent increase over 2009.
But many of those orders are for tractors that will replace aging rigs, not expand truck fleets that reduced their tractor counts deeply over the past three years.
"We can't forget about the contraction that took place" in the recession, Tam said. "Even those who are adding capacity aren't going back to where they were."
Investment research firm Avondale Partners estimates truckload capacity dropped a net 16 percent from 2008 through the first two quarters of 2010.
OEMs reported a nearly 100,000-truck production backlog in February, ACT said. That production backlog probably grew by 8,000 to 10,000 tractors in March.
Truck makers are struggling with their own capacity issues, Tam said.
"We believe the industry is constrained by (tight) manufacturing capacity," he said, not so much at truck plants as among manufacturers supplying truck parts.

Die Nutzfahrzeug-Branche ist wieder auf Wachstumskurs. Auch das Mercedes-Benz Werk Gaggenau profitiert von der Erholung der Märkte und meldet steigende Produktionszahlen. Die Werkleitung und der Betriebsrat in Gaggenau haben sich vor diesem Hintergrund auf einen Aufbau der Belegschaft geeinigt. Zum einen wurde die Erhöhung der Stammbelegschaft um 80 Beschäftigte beschlossen. Die ersten Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter werden bereits ab April in ein festes Beschäftigungs-verhältnis übernommen und in verschiedenen Bereichen der Produktion eingesetzt.
Dr. Holger Steindorf, Leiter der weltweiten Getriebe- und Achsproduktion bei Daimler Trucks und Leiter des Mercedes-Benz Werkes Gaggenau: "Wir sind froh, dass wir die Krise hinter uns gelassen haben. Die Nutzfahrzeug-Branche ist wieder auf Wachstumskurs. Auch das Mercedes-Benz Werk Gaggenau profitiert von der Erholung der Märkte und meldet steigende Produktionszahlen. Die Werkleitung und der Betriebsrat in Gaggenau haben sich vor diesem Hintergrund auf einen Aufbau der Belegschaft geeinigt. Zum einen wurde die Erhöhung der Stammbelegschaft um 80 Beschäftigte beschlossen. Die ersten Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter werden bereits ab April in ein festes Beschäftigungs-verhältnis übernommen und in verschiedenen Bereichen der Produktion eingesetzt.

Seit Mitte 2010 steigen unsere Auslastung und unser Produktionsvolumen kontinuierlich an. Mit den neuen Arbeitsplätzen setzen wir ein Zeichen für die Zukunftsfähigkeit und Beschäftigung im Murgtal."
Michael Brecht, Betriebsratsvorsitzender am Standort Gaggenau: "Wir können 80 weitere Mitarbeiter an Bord holen und ihnen eine Zukunft bieten. Das ist das richtige Signal in dieser Zeit. Der Aufbau von Arbeitsplätzen zeigt das Vertrauen des Unternehmens in unsere Belegschaft und die Menschen in der Region. Mit unseren Betriebsvereinbarungen und dem Ansatz, noch weiteren Zeitarbeitskräften den Weg in unbefristete Arbeitsverhältnisse zu ebnen, sind wir auf dem richtigen Weg den Standort voranzubringen."
Zusätzlich ist der Einsatz von bis zu 400 Zeitarbeitskräften vereinbart, die die Stammbelegschaft im Jahr 2011 ergänzen können. Damit wird dem stark zyklischen Nutzfahrzeuggeschäft Rechnung getragen und die Belegschaft am Standort langfristig gesichert.
Dr. Holger Steindorf: "Wir beobachten die Entwicklung der Lkw- Märkte sehr genau. Bei Bedarf müssen wir kurzfristig sowohl nach oben als auch unten flexibel reagieren können. Zeitarbeit ist dabei ein wichtiges Instrument. Damit haben wir die Möglichkeit, den Standort und die Stammbelegschaft langfristig zu sichern."
Darüber hinaus werden im Jahr 2011 über 110 Nachwuchskräfte im Werk Gaggenau übernommen. Hierzu zählen Auszubildende, die eine Ausbildung in technischen oder kaufmännischen Berufen abgeschlossen haben und alle in in ein unbefristetes Arbeitsverhältnis übernommen werden. Zudem bietet das Werk Gaggenau diesen Sommer wieder Plätze für rund 900 Ferienbeschäftigte an. Volljährige Schüler, Studenten und Anwärter auf den freiwilligen Zivil- beziehungsweise Wehrdienst können sich für eine Ferienbeschäftigung im Werk für den Zeitraum vom 1. Juni bis 30. September 2011 bewerben.

Der Preis für Diesel steigt und steigt. Nun diskutiert die EU-Kommission zusätzlich über eine Anhebung des Steuersatzes auf Diesel, da dieser bisher weniger besteuert wird als andere Kraftstoffe. Das trifft natürlich vor allem die Spediteure hart. Dabei haben die gerade genug damit zu tun, die gestiegenen Kosten an die Kunden weiterzugeben. "Die Verträge mit den Partnern müssen geändert werden", erklärt Mike Leonhardt von Cargo Dünner.
Vor allem bei langfristigen Verträgen gibt es meist eine Dieselklausel. Mit einem Index des statistischen Bundesamtes könne man den offiziellen Dieselpreis ermitteln und nach einer Formel Ab- oder Zuschläge berechnen, erläutert Leonhardt. Auf fünf Prozent beziffert er die momentane Verteuerung auf Fracht. Gott sei Dank sei die Nachfrage wegen der wirtschaftlichen Lage gut und Laderaum eher knapp. Die 29 großen LKW von Dünner transportieren hauptsächlich Maschinenteile und Stahl.

EU-Kommission In Brüssel überlegen die Politiker, den bisher niedrigeren Mindeststeuersatz für Diesel an den anderer Kraftstoffe anzugleichen. Besteuert werden sollen künftig nicht mehr die Menge, sondern der Energiegehalt und der Kohlendioxidausstoß.
Steuer Nach Angaben des Mineralölwirtschaftsverbandes beträgt die Mineralölsteuer für Diesel in Deutschland 47 Cent pro Liter, bei Superbenzin sind es 65,5 Cent.
"Erhebliche Mehrkosten"
Auch bei der Leverkusener Spedition Hebbel fallen seit einiger Zeit "erhebliche Mehrkosten" an, wie Geschäftsführer Ernst Hebbel erläutert: "Wir haben mit den Preisen zu kämpfen." Aber nicht nur Diesel sei teurer geworden, sondern auch Personal-, Sach- und Reisekosten. Je nach Marktsituation müsse man mit den Kunden jeden Monat neu verhandeln. Seine Spedition habe einen festen Kundenstamm von etwa 35 Firmen, für die sie hauptsächlich Stahl transportieren.
Für Hebbel sind nun die Politiker gefordert, sich gegen die Forderungen aus Brüssel durchzusetzen. "Ich hoffe, dass die Vernunft siegt. Es geht doch nicht, dass man dem Bürger immer tiefer in die Tasche greift", sagt Ernst Hebbel. Da das Votum aus allen Ländern einstimmig ausfallen muss, sieht er Hoffnung, dass der Vorstoß scheitert.

Denn letztlich würden die Verbraucher die Mehrkosten tragen müssen. "Dabei werden die Dieselpreise sowieso wegen der Spannungen in aller Welt weiter steigen", meint Niesen, der mit seinen 40 großen Lastwagen hauptsächlich Möbel transportiert und damit nicht ganz so weite Strecken zurücklegen muss wie seine Kollegen.
Hybridlastwagen sind zu teuer
Etwa 35 Liter auf 100 Kilometer schluckt ein LKW. "Die Auswirkungen des hohen Spritpreises lassen sich da nicht wegdiskutieren", sagt der Spediteur, der sich auch auf Kunsttransporte spezialisiert hat. Die Speditionen bekämen zwar als Großkunden den Diesel ein paar Cent billiger, aber jetzt schon sei man "am Maximum angelangt", sagt Niesen.
Die Alternativen, auch beim LKW-Antrieb, stecken noch in der Entwicklung und sind "zu teuer", urteilt Niesen über die ersten Hybridlastwagen, die nun entwickelt wurden. "Die Anschaffungskosten sind sehr hoch und stehen in keiner Relation zur Ersparnis", weiß der Spediteur.

Freight movements soared 6.9 percent in March, the first sizeable rise since August 2010, according to the March 2011 Cass Freight Index.
Volume was up for all modes in March, especially rail, which saw great improvement from winter weather slowdowns earlier in the year. Truck tonnage is continuing to grow, and capacity is beginning to tighten in many markets. Compared to the same period in 2010, March shipments were up 13.8 percent.
Freight payments registered another significant increase in March, up 6.3 percent, on the heels of the 12.5 percent rise in February. Total dollars spent on freight shipments in March 2011 are 33.6 percent higher than a year ago.
Now that the economy is strengthening - most economic indicators are heading upward - the freight industry is benefitting from the resurgence. Available capacity, especially in the trucking sector, is becoming less abundant as volumes increase, giving carriers room to start raising rates. The same growth in demand will also result in the trucking industry finding itself short of trucks and drivers by year's end. By the third quarter, the ability to determine rates will shift back into the hands of carriers and rates will increase quickly and steeply.
The Cass Freight Index represents monthly levels of shipment activity, in terms of volume of shipments and expenditures for freight shipments. Cass Information Systems processes more than $17 billion in annual freight payables on behalf of its clients. The Cass Freight Index is based upon the shipments of hundreds of Cass clients representing a broad spectrum of industries. The index uses January 1990 as its base month.

The most recent data continues to reflect improved demand across all segments of the heavy-duty commercial vehicle market.
Fundamentals, including pent-up demand resulting from deferred replacement, tight freight-carrying capacity, improved fleet financial performance and some easing in credit availability, will combine to support an upcycle for the market, according to ACT Research. Class 8 net orders continue at a strong pace, and after a slight pause in January, commercial trailer orders have returned to a solid growth trajectory.
The latest release of the ACT North American Commercial Vehicle Outlook reflects the impact of a U.S. economic recovery proceeding at a slow, but self-sustaining pace. This economic outlook, combined with recent market performance, suggests that ACT's forecasts for rising commercial vehicle production through 2011 and into 2012 are on track.
"While some growing pains are occurring as the industry ramps up to meet the widespread increase in demand, the commercial vehicle market will continue at a solid pace," said Sam Kahan, ACT's chief economist. "Our outlook is for 2011 real GDP to grow 3.0 percent on a year-over-year basis. While this is slightly less than previously thought, it is in line with most forecasters."
The most recent data continues to reflect improved demand across all segments of the heavy-duty commercial vehicle market.
Fundamentals, including pent-up demand resulting from deferred replacement, tight freight-carrying capacity, improved fleet financial performance and some easing in credit availability, will combine to support an upcycle for the market, according to ACT Research. Class 8 net orders continue at a strong pace, and after a slight pause in January, commercial trailer orders have returned to a solid growth trajectory.
The latest release of the ACT North American Commercial Vehicle Outlook reflects the impact of a U.S. economic recovery proceeding at a slow, but self-sustaining pace. This economic outlook, combined with recent market performance, suggests that ACT's forecasts for rising commercial vehicle production through 2011 and into 2012 are on track.

Im Auftaktquartal hatte Daimlers Pkw-Tochter Mercedes-Benz Cars 12% zugelegt. In diesem Jahr wollen die Schwaben mit mehr als 1,3 Millionen Mercedes-Benz und Smart so viele Autos verkaufen wie nie zuvor.
Mit 90.000 Lastwagen hat der weltgrößte Nutzfahrzeughersteller nach eigenen Angaben bis Ende März zudem 27% mehr Lastwagen an die Kunden gebracht als im Vorjahreszeitraum. 65% mehr Bestellungen im ersten Quartal dürften sich in den kommenden Monaten im Umsatz niederschlagen. Während Daimler von seinen Transportern 16% mehr verkaufte, büßten die Busse im ersten Quartal 8% ein. Das Geschäft dürfte aber im zweiten Halbjahr anziehen, erklärte der Konzern.
Die Rekordverkäufe sollen den Umsatz in diesem Jahr über das Niveau des Vorjahres heben, bekräftigte Zetsche. Der Gewinn vor Zinsen und Steuern (EBIT) soll die 7,2 Mrd EUR des Vorjahres deutlich übertreffen. Und auch wenn Finanzvorstand Bodo Uebber in diesem Jahr aufgrund der Investitionen in neue Modelle und Werke eine Delle ausschließen wollte, soll die Rendite des Pkw-Geschäfts mit den Marken Mercedes-Benz, smart, Maybach und AMG bis 2013 von zuletzt 8,7% auf 10% steigen.
Um dem wachsenden Wunsch der Kunden nach umweltschonenderen, verbrauchsärmeren Autos nachzukommen, will Daimler ab diesem Jahr mit kleineren Modellen angreifen, sagte Zetsche. In den kommenden neun Jahren dürfte die Nachfrage weltweit von derzeit 19 Millionen Autos auf dann 34 Millionen Kleinwagen zulegen, schätzt Daimler. Sowohl das sportliche Kleinwagen-Konzept, das die Stuttgarter auf der Automesse in Shanghai vorstellen wollen als auch die neue B-Klasse, die auf der IAA in Frankfurt im Herbst ihr Debüt geben soll sowie zwei weitere Kompakte sollen eine "Kampfansage an den Wettbewerb" sein, sagte Zetsche. LÜBTHEEN - Es ist ein in der Öffentlichkeit meist unterschätzter Riese, der da am Rande Lübtheens mit seiner riesigen, blauen Produktionshalle liegt. Von der Firma "Brüggen" ist die Rede, ein Unternehmen, das in der Griesen Gegend große, hochmoderne Kühlanhänger für Lkw baut. Mit aktuell 300 Beschäftigten ist die Firma mit Stammsitz in Friesland der mit Abstand wichtigste Arbeitgeber der Region. Und es soll weiter aufwärts gehen nach sehr harter Krise. Diese Aussicht eröffnete der Geschäftsführer der Firma Brüggen in Lübtheen, Wolfgang Wolke, Landrat Rolf Christiansen bei seinem jüngsten Ämterbesuch.
Die Trailerbranche gehört zu den am härtesten umkämpften Bereich im sowie so nicht zimperlichen Lkw-Markt. Wie hart es werden kann, hat gerade Brüggen schmerzlich erfahren. Denn fast zeitgleich mit der Fertigstellung des Riesenwerkes an traditionsreicher Stätte, brach die Nachfrage nach Kühltrailern ein, schlagartig. Am Tiefpunkt verließen das große Werk gerade einmal zwei Trailer pro Tag, die Zahl der Beschäftigten war auf 140 gesunken. Derzeit sind es 100 Trailer in der Woche, schon in den kommenden Tagen soll die Zahl der produzierten Einheiten auf 120 steigen, und zum Jahresende wird die Zahl von 150 Trailer in der Woche avisiert. Die Auftragsvorlauf liegt aktuell bei zehn Wochen und steigt weiter, die Nachfrage zieht in vielen Ländern Europas wieder an. Jetzt einfach die Produktion wieder hochzufahren, ist nicht so einfach, wie es sich liest. Allein die Optimierung der Anlagen, die ja noch nie unter Volllast liefen, fordert enormen Aufwand. Manches ist auch schon wieder ausgetauscht. Noch schwieriger ist es in einem anziehenden Arbeitsmarkt die passenden Arbeitskräfte zu finden, vor allem im Führungsbereich. "Ich könnte sofort zehn Ingenieure und Meister einstellen, wenn ich nur welche finden würde", berichtete Wolke dem Landrat. Seine Firma arbeitet inzwischen mit acht Leiharbeitsfirmen zusammen, um überhaupt an die benötigten Kräfte zu kommen. Ein Problem, die Lübtheener Region gilt für Auswärtige als nicht besonders attraktiv und hat auch noch mit relativ hohen Mieten zu kämpfen.
Christiansen, der sich das alles geduldig anhörte, versprach das Unternehmen verstärkt in die Arbeit der Wirtschaftsförderung des Landkreises einzubeziehen. Der zunehmende Mangel an Arbeitskräften sei ein ernstes Problem, das inzwischen viele Unternehmen beträfe. Das wichtigste Reservoir, aus dem man schöpfen müsse sei das der vielen Tausend Tagespendler aus dem Landkreis.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Paccar Inc (PCAR.O) reported a quarterly profit that beat Wall Street estimates as sales of trucks and truck parts improved with the economy, and the company increased its sales outlook for heavy-truck sales.
The company, which makes trucks under the Peterbilt, Kenworth and DAF brands, said it expects to deliver up to 20 percent more trucks in the second quarter than the first quarter, subject to suppliers' ability to meet demand for tires and other parts.
"North American and European economies are recovering, with the exception of the residential and commercial construction markets in the United States," said Mark Pigott, chief executive.
It revised up its 2011 forecast for industry retail sales of Class 8 heavy trucks to a range of 200,000 to 220,000, the highest since 2006, from its February forecast of 180,000 to 200,000 trucks.
In addition to supply disruptions caused by Japan's March earthquake and tsunami, rubber and other commodities prices have spiked.
"We're looking at, if we can, depending on the market's appetite, having pricing adjustments on a regular basis -- that could be every month, that could be every two months -- to reflect the rapidly increased commodity pricing," Pigott said on a conference call with analysts.
The company's shares, which had fallen more than 10 percent this year, were up 4 percent in midday trading at $52.29.
Paccar on Tuesday reported a first-quarter profit of $193 million, or 53 cents a share, sharply above the $68.3 million, or 19 cents a share, it earned a year earlier.
Revenue increased more than 47 percent to $3.28 billion.
Analysts, on average, had expected Bellevue, Washington-based Paccar to report a profit of 49 cents a share on revenue of $2.98 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Truck sales gained in Europe and North America, and financial services profit and parts revenue increased globally, Pigott said.
Sixty percent of the expected jump in second-quarter truck sales would likely come from North America, he said.
Pigott said Paccar was looking at "conservative steps" in China and India, as well as deploying some funds in Brazil and possibly central Europe and Russia, and that it will consider possible acquisitions.

Eaton Corp.'s (ETN) first-quarter earnings rose 83%, as the diversified industrial company benefited from rising demand for farm and construction machinery and a rebounding market for commercial trucks.
Eaton reported a string of double-digit profit and sales gains in its major business categories, allowing the company to exceed expectations for the first quarter and giving executives the confidence to raise their full-year earnings outlook.
"All and all, a very strong start to what we think is going to be a record year," Chairman and Chief Executive Alexander Cutler said during a conference call Wednesday with analysts.
Increased spending on capital equipment translated into elevated demand for Eaton's products. The Cleveland company supplies electrical equipment, hydraulic components for farm and construction equipment, aerospace systems and parts for cars and commercial trucks.
In Eaton's hydraulics business, which supplies components to Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) and Deere & Co. (DE), first-quarter operating profit nearly doubled from a year ago as sales rose 40%.
"The hydraulics markets in the first quarter continued their V-shape recovery from the sharp downturn in 2008 and 2009," Cutler said.
The company's truck business had a 96% increase in operating income and 27% increase in sales, as the commercial truck industry snapped back following a prolonged slump in demand for trucks. The company raised its industrywide forecast for heavy-duty truck production in North America this year to 265,000 vehicles, up from 240,000 trucks previously. Cutler said he suspects actual demand for heavy-duty trucks may be higher than the revised figure, but added that production capacity constraints will likely limit the volume to about 265,000 trucks.
Electrical sales in the Americas, Eaton's largest business segment by revenue, grew 20% from a year ago, as the unit's operating profit rose 27%. The company noted that it is beginning to see improvement in electrical equipment sales for nonresidential buildings, particularly in the oil and gas production installations. Eaton also is seeing rising sales of backup power systems for computer server centers as companies increasingly combine smaller, separate server rooms into larger sites that require new power and temperature control equipment.
In Eaton's aerospace business, which has been the company's weakest in recent quarters, first-quarter operating profit slipped 8% while sales grew 2%. The operating profit margin for the unit fell to 11.6% from 13.3% a year earlier.
"We're not particularly pleased by our performance in [aerospace] this quarter and we're looking to improve in the second half" of the year, Cutler said. "Our margins in aerospace were impacted by increased expenses stemming from changes in scope, programming delays and execution of new customer programs."
Cutler said the Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami will likely have only a minor impact on Eaton's operations with most of the effects coming in the second quarter as Japanese companies with disrupted production capacity and logistics attempt to replenish depleted inventories of components, particularly for the automotive industry.
"It's very hard to estimate" the effects, Cutler said. "What most people are speculating about is the second-quarter production in automotive."
Eaton expects favorable currency rates to add $200 million to sales this year, mostly as a result of the rising value of the Euro against the U.S. dollar and an higher in inflation in Brazil.
Eaton raised its full-year earnings estimate from February by 15 cents a share, to $3.70 to $4 a share before acquisition costs. It also forecast second-quarter earnings of 90 cents to 96 cents a share, excluding acquisition costs. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect the company to earn $3.81 a share for 2011 and 93 cents for the current quarter.
For the quarter ended March 31, Eaton had a profit of $286 million, or 83 cents a share, up from $156 million, or 46 cents a share, a year earlier.
Excluding acquisition charges, earnings rose to 84 cents a share from 48 cents. Sales grew 23% to $3.8 billion. Analysts expected the company to earn 80 cents a share on revenue of $3.65 billion.
Eaton's stock was recently trading up 1.4% at $53.35 a share.

Eaton Corp.'s (ETN) first-quarter earnings rose 83%, as the diversified industrial company benefited from rising demand for farm and construction machinery and a rebounding market for commercial trucks.
Eaton reported a string of double-digit profit and sales gains in its major business categories, allowing the company to exceed expectations for the first quarter and giving executives the confidence to raise their full-year earnings outlook.
"All and all, a very strong start to what we think is going to be a record year," Chairman and Chief Executive Alexander Cutler said during a conference call Wednesday with analysts.
Increased spending on capital equipment translated into elevated demand for Eaton's products. The Cleveland company supplies electrical equipment, hydraulic components for farm and construction equipment, aerospace systems and parts for cars and commercial trucks.
In Eaton's hydraulics business, which supplies components to Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) and Deere & Co. (DE), first-quarter operating profit nearly doubled from a year ago as sales rose 40%.
"The hydraulics markets in the first quarter continued their V-shape recovery from the sharp downturn in 2008 and 2009," Cutler said.
The company's truck business had a 96% increase in operating income and 27% increase in sales, as the commercial truck industry snapped back following a prolonged slump in demand for trucks. The company raised its industrywide forecast for heavy-duty truck production in North America this year to 265,000 vehicles, up from 240,000 trucks previously. Cutler said he suspects actual demand for heavy-duty trucks may be higher than the revised figure, but added that production capacity constraints will likely limit the volume to about 265,000 trucks.
Electrical sales in the Americas, Eaton's largest business segment by revenue, grew 20% from a year ago, as the unit's operating profit rose 27%. The company noted that it is beginning to see improvement in electrical equipment sales for nonresidential buildings, particularly in the oil and gas production installations. Eaton also is seeing rising sales of backup power systems for computer server centers as companies increasingly combine smaller, separate server rooms into larger sites that require new power and temperature control equipment.
In Eaton's aerospace business, which has been the company's weakest in recent quarters, first-quarter operating profit slipped 8% while sales grew 2%. The operating profit margin for the unit fell to 11.6% from 13.3% a year earlier.
"We're not particularly pleased by our performance in [aerospace] this quarter and we're looking to improve in the second half" of the year, Cutler said. "Our margins in aerospace were impacted by increased expenses stemming from changes in scope, programming delays and execution of new customer programs."
Cutler said the Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami will likely have only a minor impact on Eaton's operations with most of the effects coming in the second quarter as Japanese companies with disrupted production capacity and logistics attempt to replenish depleted inventories of components, particularly for the automotive industry.
"It's very hard to estimate" the effects, Cutler said. "What most people are speculating about is the second-quarter production in automotive."
Eaton expects favorable currency rates to add $200 million to sales this year, mostly as a result of the rising value of the Euro against the U.S. dollar and an higher in inflation in Brazil.
Eaton raised its full-year earnings estimate from February by 15 cents a share, to $3.70 to $4 a share before acquisition costs. It also forecast second-quarter earnings of 90 cents to 96 cents a share, excluding acquisition costs. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect the company to earn $3.81 a share for 2011 and 93 cents for the current quarter.
For the quarter ended March 31, Eaton had a profit of $286 million, or 83 cents a share, up from $156 million, or 46 cents a share, a year earlier.
Excluding acquisition charges, earnings rose to 84 cents a share from 48 cents. Sales grew 23% to $3.8 billion. Analysts expected the company to earn 80 cents a share on revenue of $3.65 billion.
Eaton's stock was recently trading up 1.4% at $53.35 a share.

Freightliner erhöht Produktion und Personal!
CLEVELAND — New jobs are coming to Freightliner in Cleveland, and officials have discussed adding a second shift at the truck manufacturing plant, an executive said Thursday.
Daimler Trucks North America, parent company of Freightliner, plans to add 225 jobs by June, said Roger Nielsen, Daimler’s chief operating officer.
Officials are considering adding a second shift, Nielsen said. And if market conditions continue to improve, Freightliner employees will have the opportunity to work overtime by this summer, he said.
“There is a strong customer need for trucks,” Nielsen said.
He was in town to promote the solar farm Duke Energy has installed in Freightliner’s front yard. The 1,560 solar panels generate 359 kilowatts of energy — enough electricity to power 38 homes — and help Duke Energy meet new requirements for renewable energy.
Layoffs in 2007 and 2008 decimated the workforce at Freightliner, which once employed 4,000 people and manufactured 220 trucks per day.
Employment fell to 695 workers, and production bottomed out at 32 trucks per day. Rowan County and the town of Cleveland gave Freightliner economic incentives in 2009 to protect the remaining jobs and begin production of military vehicles.
Plant Manager Mike McCurry said the plant is on track to hit 87 trucks daily by August, with 1,100 current employees now turning out 68 trucks per day. The 225 new jobs will include truck assemblers and skilled tradesmen.
The company’s market share, now about 40 percent, is growing, Nielsen said. Bringing on a second shift “would really depend on a lot of factors,” he said.
“We are talking about, at some point, adding a second shift,” he said. “We are in preparations.”
Economic indicators for the trucking industry are “absolutely favorable,” Nielsen said, although the company is keeping a close eye on gas prices.
So far, the rising cost of driving a truck hasn’t hampered Daimler’s expansion plans. Even at $5 per gallon in 2008, fuel prices didn’t affect production, Nielsen said.
“But it is a factor for consumers,” he said. “It’s still a great concern.”
Duke Energy signed a 25-year lease for the solar panels in Freightliner’s front yard.
Nielsen and others commemorated the partnership with a Switch On ceremony. The panels have been collecting energy from the sun since December.
Duke has invested $50 million so far in 18 solar sites across the state on the ground and rooftops, said Tony Almeida, a Duke Energy vice president who lives in Rowan County.
Daimler is one of the energy company’s best customers in the region, with a seven-digit annual power bill. The company is a technology leader and wants to be the first to put an emissions-free truck on the road, Nielsen said.
The solar site helps as the company works to lessen its impact on the environment and meet key performance indicators, he said.
“This solar project is one big step toward us getting an A+ in this class,” Nielsen told Cleveland Elementary School students in the audience.
The Cleveland plant is one of Duke’s distributed generation solar energy sites. The Daimler facility in High Point, headquarters of Thomas Built Buses, is home to another 1,690 solar panels projected to power an additional 41 homes annually.
The power generated by the panels goes back into the community to help Duke Energy meet its residential renewable energy commitment.
The renewable energy standard for North Carolina requires each public electric utility to meet at least 12.5 percent of its North Carolina retail customers’ electricity needs through new renewable energy sources or energy efficiency measures by 2021.
The panels are hard to miss for motorists on N.C. 70.
“We are fueling the imagination of every person who drives by these solar arrays,” said Sandra Carter, Daimler’s environmental manager.
The high visibility of the panels brings greater awareness of renewable energy to the community and could inspire people to dream up new ways to meet energy needs, Carter said.
Cleveland Mayor John Steele lauded the 22-year partnership between the town and Freightliner, even delivering part of his remarks in German. Daimler is based in Germany.

Volvo AB (VOLVB), the world’s second- largest maker of commercial vehicles, reported first-quarter profit that beat analyst estimates as the European and North American heavy truck markets expand.
Net income more than doubled to 4.09 billion kronor ($670 million), from 1.68 billion kronor a year earlier, the Gothenburg, Sweden-based company said. The average estimate in a Bloomberg survey of 12 analysts was for profit of 3.48 billion kronor. Revenue rose 22 percent to 71.6 billion kronor.
Volvo today raised its industry forecast for heavy truck sales in North America and Europe to a range of 230,000 to 240,000 vehicles in both regions. The previous projection was for deliveries of 220,000 units in each area. Volvo’s truck orders advanced 40 percent in the quarter to 61,292 vehicles.
“Volvo delivered a strong set of numbers,” said Morten Imsgard, an analyst at Sydbank A/S in Aabenraa, Denmark, with an “overweight” rating on the shares. “Volvo has a strong discipline keeping the costs down while sales go up.”
Volvo cut 21 billion kronor in spending during the downturn that started in 2008 by slashing jobs and other costs. At least half those reductions should be permanent, the Swedish company has said.
Heavy-truck deliveries are increasing in the U.S. and Europe as retailers and industrial suppliers ship more goods. Volvo, the maker of Mack trucks in North America and Renault trucks in Europe, said last month it was recalling 700 workers at its plant in New River Valley, Virginia, to boost production.

Scania brummt in Q1! Zahlen besser als erwartet
tockholmDer schwedische Nutzfahrzeughersteller Scania hat zum Jahresauftakt den Gewinn fast verdoppelt und beim Umsatz deutlich zugelegt. Das mehrheitlich zu VW gehörende Unternehmen fuhr mit seinen Lastwagen und Bussen im ersten Quartal einen Nettogewinn von 2,5 Milliarden Kronen (281 Mio. Euro) gegenüber 1,4 Milliarden Kronen zum Jahresauftakt 2010 ein. Der Umsatz stieg um 25 Prozent auf 20,7 Milliarden Kronen, wie Scania am Mittwoch in Södertälje mitteilte.
Konzernchef Leif Östling nannte die höheren Volumen bei Produktion sowie Service und eine bessere Kapazitätsauslastung als wichtigste Gründe für die positive Entwicklung.
