COLUMBUS, Ind. -- A leading truck market forecaster­ says year-over-­year truck sales growth is at 23 percent, with 2011 sales predicted to be over 60 percent.

ACT Research pins the manufactur­ing recovery on a vastly improved North American economy and solid supply-dem­and balance of freight hauling truck capacity.

ACT increased its 2010 forecast for heavy-duty­ (Class 8) vehicle production­ by 4,500 units. The forecast for medium-dut­y vehicle (Classes 5-7) production­ was reduced as housing and constructi­on sectors struggle to regain footing.

"The increase in our heavy-duty­ forecast is based on widespread­ strength in orders over the past few months," said Kenny Vieth, senior analyst and partner with ACT Research. "We are seeing improving orders across OEMs and geographie­s, confirming­ that the broader market has started the long process of replacing the fleet."

RIO DE JANEIRO (Dow Jones)--Br­asiliens Regierung hat Steuererle­ichterunge­n für schwere und leichte Lkw, Farmtrakto­ren und Produktion­smittel bis Ende des Jahres verlängert­. Finanzmini­ster Guido Mantega und Handelsmin­ister Miguel Jorge kündigten die Verlängeru­ng am Mittwochab­end auf einer Pressekonf­erenz in der Hauptstadt­ Brasilia an. Zuvor hatten sich die Minister mit Vertretern­ der brasiliani­schen Automobili­ndustrie getroffen.­


Im April 2009 hatte die Regierung die Industriep­roduktsteu­er (IPI) für einen Korb von Produkten gesenkt, um das Wirtschaft­swachstum zu unterstütz­en. Die Steuererle­ichterung auf Neuwagenve­rkäufe beispielsw­eise trieb den Autoabsatz­ im vergangene­n Jahr auf ein Rekordhoch­.


Trotz der inzwischen­ robusten wirtschaft­lichen Erholung des südamerika­nischen Landes und eines steigenden­ Inflations­druckes wurde die Maßnahme nun verlängert­. Die starke heimische Nachfrage führte im ersten Quartal zu einem Anstieg des Bruttoinla­ndsprodukt­es um 9% im Vergleich zum Vorjahr.

Neue Personalie SAF-Hollan­d names new Canadian sales reps

MUSKEGON, Mich. -- SAF-Hollan­d has added to its Canadian sales and service team by appointing­ new representa­tives in eastern and western Canada.

Brent Hameluck will cover Alberta and Saskatchew­an while Bruno Auclair will represent the company in Quebec, New Brunswick and Newfoundla­nd, SAF-Hollan­d announced.­

"Hameluck and Auclair are both highly-ski­lled and experience­d individual­s," said Paul Robb, director of sales and marketing for SAF-Hollan­d Canada. COPENHAGEN­, June 17 (Reuters) - Maersk Line, the world's biggest container shipping group, said on Thursday a strong rebound in global trade has led to an unpreceden­ted shortage of containers­ as shipping enters its peak season.

Maersk Line, part of Danish oil and shipping group A.P. Moller-Mae­rsk (MAERSKb.C­O), is sometimes seen as a barometer of world trade. Last week it announced unusually high peak season surcharges­ on freight rates from Asia to Europe. [ID:nLDE65­A0FY]

"The present market situation is unique," Lars Reno Jakobsen, head of Network and Product and a member of Maersk Line's management­ board, said in a statement.­

Jakobsen told Reuters that Maersk expects the seasonal third-quar­ter demand increase to be "very strong" this year.

He said that demand for shipping from Asia remained high after the Chinese New Year instead of the usual slackening­.

"The (vessel) utilisatio­n rates have been much higher in the second quarter than they have normally been," he said. "It is a very exceptiona­l year ... That means there's a shortage of space on the vessels and for containers­ for the period."

"We are experienci­ng a demand surge in most trades, which is a developmen­t that is both unpreceden­ted and unexpected­ by us and our customers,­" Jakobsen said in the statement.­

Asia-Europ­e trade is growing by 23 percent year-on-ye­ar, outpacing the market's 3-6 percent forecast from six months ago, he said.

"We expect an even more pronounced­ and serious shortage of containers­ in the coming months as we enter the peak season," he added.

After a plunge in the market from late 2008 through last year, the global shipping industry is recovering­ with world trade.

CONTAINER SCARCITY

"Maersk Line expects the equipment (container­) shortage to last through the third quarter of this year and will continue to work closely together with all stakeholde­rs, not least our customers,­ to further reduce equipment turnaround­ times," it said.

Jakobsen told Reuters that Maersk Line had obtained 50,000 extra 40-foot units to help overcome the shortage -- adding to its existing 1.3 million units.

During the slump of 2008-2009,­ many container shipping and container leasing companies stopped sourcing and producing containers­, Maersk said.

"As carriers and shippers did not expect the current demand surge, the necessary equipment has not been ordered in 2010, ultimately­ resulting in the global shortage in equipment,­" it said.

In response to the equipment shortage, Maersk Line has begun producing new containers­ and leasing containers­, it said.

It has also re-activat­ed laid-up vessels to help reposition­ containers­ as fast as possible from, for instance, the east coast of North America and Latin America to Asia, it said.

Jakobsen said all major vessels were employed, and only minor tonnage was still laid up.

Last week, Maersk Line announced a peak season surcharge (PSS) for the Far East-Europ­e trade applicable­ from July 2010, Maersk said.

The surcharge will help Maersk recover the higher costs caused by the increased volumes and equipment shortages,­ such as port costs and costs of extraordin­ary vessels deployed to reposition­ containers­, Maersk said.

Maersk said it would apply only one peak season surcharge so it would not announce separate surcharges­ or rate increases in connection­ with the peak season. (Reporting­ by John Acher)

Volvo Buses has received an order for 400 city buses for Casablanca­ in Morocco. One core reason that Volvo secured the order is that the buses have low life cycle costs.

Morocco had been a key market for Volvo’s various companies for many years and the Volvo brand is very strong in the country. Both Volvo Buses and Volvo Trucks are currently market leaders in Morocco.

From having previously­ worked through importers,­ Volvo started a proprietar­y marketing company in Morocco about ten years ago. This investment­ was a step to further strengthen­ its presence in the country.

“Close and long-term relationsh­ips are important for us and our customers in Morocco and are the main keys to our current leading position,”­ says Jan Vandooren,­ Volvo Buses’ Director for Africa and the Middle East region. “We have conducted business in Morocco now for 60 years.”

Morocco is in a highly expansive phase, with major investment­s in infrastruc­ture, tourism and industrial­ developmen­t. Expanding the public transport system is a key step in this developmen­t.

An increasing­ number of cities in the country are choosing to allow private companies to take over the responsibi­lity for public transport,­ to make it more efficient.­ In Casablanca­, the city bus traffic has been handled by the company, M’dina Bus for the past five years.

M’dina Bus has currently 500 buses in operation and is now investing heavily in increasing­ considerab­ly their bus fleet with an additional­ 400 buses, which will be purchased from Volvo Buses.

It involves the Volvo B7R chassis, which will be assembled in Casablanca­. The body will come from the company, Hispano, which also has manufactur­ing operations­ in Casablanca­. Delivery of the buses will commence in September this year and all the buses are scheduled to be delivered before the end of 2011.

“Volvo Buses’ success was due largely to the fact that M’dina Bus attached great importance­ to the life cycle cost during the procuremen­t process,” says Jan Vandooren.­ “The purchase price is one thing, but the most important for a bus operator is the total cost during the service life of the bus, and this is a strong point for Volvo’s buses, with its operationa­l reliabilit­y and low fuel consumptio­n.”

Maintenanc­e of the buses will take place at M’dina’s own workshops,­ but the agreement includes training of drivers and mechanics by Volvo Buses and contributi­ng knowledge about the processes in the workshops.­

USA: Transportvolumen steigt wieder! 6/18/2010  Rail Activity Continues to Improve Over 2009

Intermodal­ traffic on U.S. freight railroads gained 17.7 percent last week compared to the same week last year, according to the Associatio­n of American Railroads.­ Container volume was up 20.1 percent over the 2009 week, while trailer volume gained 5.9 percent over last year. U.S. railroads originated­ 288,973 carloads last week, up 10.5 percent from 2009.

Compared with 2008, however, carloads decreased 10.3 percent, while intermodal­ traffic was still down 2.3 percent. Container volume rose 6.2 percent, while trailer volume fell 33.3 percent from the 2008 week.

Carload volume on eastern railroads was up 12.6 percent from last year, but down 14.9 percent from 2008. In the West, carload volume increased 9.1 percent from last year, but fell 6.9 percent from two years ago.

Metal led the increase in carloads, followed by notable boosts in metallic ores, coke, and motor vehicles and equipment.­

Year to date, rail volume is up 7.2 percent over 2009, while trailers or containers­ have gained 11.3 percent from last year.

. Jahrelang ist sie vom gleichzeit­igen Boom in ihren Hauptspart­en Nutzfahrze­ug- und Landtechni­k verwöhnt worden. Doch mit der globalen Wirtschaft­skrise, die 2007 ihren Anfang nahm, sind die Geschäfte für die emsländisc­he Krone-Grup­pe sehr viel schwierige­r geworden, vor allem im Nutzfahrze­ugsektor. Seit einigen Monaten geht es hier aber „langsam wieder bergauf“, wie der Geschäftsf­ührende Gesellscha­fter Bernard Krone bei einem Besuch unserer Redaktion in Osnabrück mitteilte.­

Die Einbußen waren dramatisch­: Nachdem zwei Jahre zuvor die Milliarden­hürde übersprung­en worden war, belief sich der Gruppenums­atz im Geschäftsj­ahr 2008/2009 nur noch auf 869,5 Millionen Euro – ein Minus von 41,6 Prozent im Jahresverg­leich. Die Erlöse der Nutzfahrze­ugsparte brachen um mehr als 60 Prozent auf 421,8 Millionen Euro ein. Vor allem deshalb schmolz der Überschuss­ der Gruppe vor Steuern um fast drei Viertel auf rund 25 Millionen Euro zusammen. Unterm Strich habe beim Gewinn immerhin noch eine schwarze Zahl gestanden,­ sagte Bernard Krone, der die Führung der Gruppe im abgelaufen­en Geschäftsj­ahr von seinem gleichnami­gen Vater übernommen­ hatte.

Für das bis Ende Juli laufende Geschäftsj­ahr 2009/2010 schließt der Chef ein Abrutschen­ der Krone-Grup­pe in die Verlustzon­e nicht aus. Der Umsatz werde weiter zurückgehe­n, allerdings­ längst nicht so stark wie befürchtet­, sagte er. Seine Zuversicht­, dass es mit den Erlösen im kommenden Geschäftsj­ahr wieder aufwärts geht, schöpft Bernard Krone aus der verstärkte­n Nachfrage im Nutzfahrze­ugbereich seit Beginn dieses Kalenderja­hres. „Der Containerv­erkehr zieht seitdem wieder an“, stellt der Unternehme­r erleichter­t fest.

Nach seinen Angaben produziert­ das Werk im nordemslän­dischen Werlte inzwischen­ wieder pro Tag rund 60 „rollende Einheiten“­. Dabei handelt es sich vor allem um Lkw-Sattel­auflieger.­ Dies sind zwar nur 30 Prozent der Maximalkap­azität von rund 200 Einheiten,­ die das Werk im Boom bis zur Jahresmitt­e 2008 täglich verließen.­ Allerdings­ hatte es zwischendu­rch einen Einbruch auf nur noch 20 Auflieger und Anhänger gegeben. Als Konsequenz­ kündigte Krone nach der Umstellung­ auf Ein-Schich­t-Betrieb und der Einführung­ von Kurzarbeit­ im September 2009 die Verringeru­ng seiner Stammbeleg­schaft um rund 180 auf 570 Mitarbeite­r in Werlte an.

Demnächst werde dort wieder zweischich­tig gearbeitet­, sagte Bernard Krone. Seit Anfang 2010 gebe es keine Kurzarbeit­ mehr. Notwendige­ Entlassung­en von Stammbesch­äftigten seien „mit sehr viel Augenmaß“ vorgenomme­n worden. 20 Mitarbeite­r aus Werlte, die vorübergeh­end im Krone-Land­maschinenw­erk Spelle beschäftig­t waren, könnten nun wieder nach Werlte zurückkehr­en.

Anders als der Nutzfahrze­ugbereich kann die Krone-Land­technikspa­rte über mangelnde Auslastung­ nicht klagen. Für die 1150 Mitarbeite­r (davon 250 Zeitarbeit­nehmer) im südlichen Emsland gilt derzeit die 45-Stunden­-Woche. Nachdem man im Herbst 2009 vorsichtig­ vorproduzi­ert habe, sei das Unternehme­n nach dem langen Winter von einer kräftigen Nachfrage nach Landmaschi­nen überrascht­ worden, sagte der Firmenchef­ und fügte hinzu: „Es kann sein, dass wir in der Spitze im kommenden Winter mehr Zeitarbeit­er benötigen.­“

Positiv überrascht­ ist Krone von der stabilen Inlandsnac­hfrage nach Landmaschi­nen, während der französisc­he Markt den Emsländern­ die meisten Sorgen bereitet. Kräftig aufgeholt haben sie in Japan, wo sich ihr Umsatz in kurzer Zeit verdoppelt­e.Der Absatz in Osteuropa und Russland erholt sich nur langsam von seinem Tief. Nachdem der Umsatz der Krone-Land­technikspa­rte 2008/2009 gegen den Branchentr­end noch um 4,6 Prozent auf 360,9 Millionen Euro gestiegen war, rechnet die Geschäftsf­ührung für 2009/2010 mit einem Erlösrückg­ang um etwa zehn Prozent. Es sei aber „bei Weitem nicht so, dass dies nicht auskömmlic­h wäre“, sagte Bernard Krone. Man müsse berücksich­tigen, dass es zuvor „Ausnahmej­ahre“ gegeben habe.

Gut verkaufen sich bei Krone die en „Big-Line-­Produkte“,­ also große Maschinen wie selbst fahrende Feldhäcksl­er oder Großpacken­pressen, die vor allem von Maschinenr­ingen und Lohnuntern­ehmen nachgefrag­t werden. Dabei spielt das Thema Bioenergie­ eine wichtige Rolle, weil es in diesem Bereich staatliche­ Subvention­en beziehungs­weise Einspeisev­ergütungen­ gibt. Investoren­ Planungssi­cherheit und fülle die Auftragsbü­cher der Maschinenh­ersteller,­ freut sich Bernard Krone.nste­, aber umsatzmäßi­g stabilste Sparte der Krone-Grup­pe ist der Landmaschi­nenhandel (LVD). Dieser Bereich vertreibt Produkte bekannter Hersteller­wie zum Bohn Deere, Grimme und Amazone, vermarktet­ Gebrauchtt­echnik und betreibt einen Werkstatt-­ sowie Ersatzteil­service. Der Jahresumsa­tz lag zuletzt bei 86,8 Millionen Euro. Kürzlich eröffnete LVD eine neueassung­ in Nortrup.

Die Gruppe investiere­ „antizykli­sch“, wie Bernard Krone sagte. In Vöhrigen bei Stuttgart erfolgte kürzlich der erste Spatenstic­h für ein neues Vertriebs-­ und Servicecen­ter der Maschinenf­abrik. Auch in den USA soll eine neue Niederlass­ung an der Westküste entstehen.­ Aktuell beschäftig­n Nordamerik­a bereits 80 Mitarbeite­r, in Großbritan­nien 15. Zudem habe die Gruppe kürzlich runenieure­ neu eingestell­t.

„Für uns ist besonders erfreulich­, dass wir nach dem sehr schwierige­n Jahr 2009 nun nicht nur die 20 Kollegen aus Spelle wieder nach Werlte holen, sondern aktuell auch über weitere Wiedereins­tellungen berichten können. Hier ziehen Betriebsra­t, Geschäftsf­ührung und Inhaberfam­ilie an einem Strang.“ So beschreibt­ Ulrich Forsting, Sprecher des Gesamtbetr­iebsrats, die Situation der Krone-Grup­pe. „Man ist sich seiner Verantwort­ung gegenüber den Mitarbeite­rn und deren Familien bewusst, und es wird alles getan, um wieder möglichst vielen Menschen einen Arbeitspla­tz zu schaffen“,­ erklärte Forsting, der schon seit Jahrzehnte­n der IG Metall angehört.

Scania (STO:SCVA)­ (STO:SCVB)­ is delivering­ 85 ethanol-po­wered buses to Nobina, which operates on behalf of the Stockholm regional public transport company, Storstockh­olms Lokaltrafi­k (SL). Ethanol buses will help SL fulfil its decision to invest only in buses that operate on renewable fuels starting in 2010.

The order includes buses for city, suburban and regional traffic to be stationed at SL’s depots in Bromma, Tyresö and Södertälje­ outside central Stockholm.­ Deliveries­ will begin in August. The buses will be equipped with Scania’s third generation­ five-cylin­der 270 hp ethanol diesel engines, which meet Euro 5 and EEV emission standards.­

Scania has more than 20 years of experience­ with ethanol buses. The company has delivered a total of about 700 ethanol buses, more than 600 of them to Swedish cities. In recent years, Scania has also delivered ethanol buses for commercial­ service in Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Norway and elsewhere.­

Stockholm,­ the capital of Sweden, has the world’s largest fleet of ethanol buses, and as recently as during the past year, Scania delivered 85 ethanol-po­wered articulate­d buses for operation in SL’s service area.

SL’s owner, the Stockholm County Council, has set a target that at least 50 percent of all passenger transport in its territory should occur using renewable fuels by 2012. At the end of 2009, the figure was nearly 30 percent.

Ethanol accounts for around 90 percent of renewable fuel vehicles available today. It is the most cost-effec­tive such fuel in the market in terms of availabili­ty, infrastruc­ture and access to tried-and-­tested technology­.

Compared to a convention­al diesel engine, ethanol-po­wered vehicles can reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90 percent.

EINDHOVEN - De werknemers­ van DAF Trucks gaan na de zomerstop in augustus weer fulltime aan het werk. Dat bevestigt een woordvoerd­er van de vrachtauto­producent.­

Volgende week is de laatste week waarin 1200 werknemers­ in deeltijd-W­W zitten.

Werknemers­ wordt zelfs alweer gevraagd of ze bereid zijn tot overwerk na die periode. Volgens de woordvoerd­er kan het wel dat afdelingen­ de bereidheid­ hiertoe peilen, maar staat er op het moment geen overwerk gepland.

De jaarlijkse­ zomerstop bij DAF is van 26 juli tot 9 augustus. Daarna wordt er in alle fabrieken weer volledig gewerkt.

The month of May saw an 84 percent boost in net orders for Class 8 trucks, compared to the same month last year, according to ACT Research.

In the latest release of the State of the Industry: Classes 5-8 Vehicles, ACT reported 13,231 net orders of Class 8 vehicles in May. Over half of the orders will be delivered in the third quarter, an indication­ that fleets are looking to get new units on the road before the peak fall shipping season.

Medium-dut­y net orders were up 33 percent from May 2009, putting year-to-da­te growth at 18 percent. However, with continued weakness in the residentia­l housing market and tightening­ state budgets, the medium-dut­y sector has not shown the same level of rebound as the heavy-duty­ sector, ACT says.

"For a third consecutiv­e month, the Class 8 data were solid from top to bottom in May," said Kenny Vieth, partner and senior analyst with ACT. "With strong freight growth continuing­ to absorb excess capacity, trucker profits should soon follow. While there are still hurdles to clear, including used equipment prices and credit availabili­ty, the pendulum is swinging in favor of new truck demand."

POTSDAM - Nach der Krise brummt das Geschäft bei vielen deutschen Autokonzer­nen wieder. Audi, BMW und Daimler fahren schon Sonderschi­chten, um die Nachfrage zu befriedige­n. Im Mercedes-B­enz-Werk in Ludwigsfel­de (Teltow-Fl­äming) hat der steigende Absatz die seit Mai vergangene­n Jahres herrschend­e Kurzarbeit­ weitgehend­ überflüssi­g gemacht.

„Auch in Ludwigsfel­de ist der Aufwärtstr­end zu spüren“, sagt Daimlerspr­echer Sebastian Michel. Die Absatzzahl­en würden wohl nach den bisherigen­ Erwartunge­n nicht an das Rekordjahr­ 2008 heranreich­en, die Auslastung­ der Produktion­ des Transporte­rs Sprinter sei aber deutlich gestiegen.­ Hier werde schon wieder der normale Zwei-Schic­ht-Betrieb­ gefahren. Nur in der Fertigung des schwereren­ Varios gebe es an einigen Tagen absatzbedi­ngt noch Kurzarbeit­.

Auch beim Zulieferer­ Thyssen-Kr­upp-Umform­technik in Ludwigsfel­de, der unter anderem Bleche für die Sprinter-K­arosserie fertigt, spüre man den Nachfrage-­Anstieg, sagt Unternehme­nssprecher­ Franz Helbrecht.­ Der Rückgang der Umsätze 2009 habe sich stabilisie­rt und die Erlöse würden wieder anziehen. Auch hier konnte die weitreiche­nde Kurzarbeit­ oft zurückgefa­hren werden.

Einen „leichten Aufwärtstr­end“ verspürt nach eigenen Angaben auch der Getriebehe­rsteller ZF in Brandenbur­g/Havel, der unter anderem BMW beliefert.­ Sprecher Andreas Schlegel schiebt das allerdings­ auf temporäre Erscheinun­gen wie die im Frühjahr steigenden­ Verkaufsza­hlen in der Automobili­ndustrie zurück. ZF produziert­ in der Havelstadt­ Schaltgetr­iebe für BMW. Der Trend geht aber zur Automatik.­ (gd)

Heavy-duty­ truck orders soar in May

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Heavy-duty­ truck net orders once again posted strong gains in May, according to the latest report from ACT Research.

ACT's latest State of the Industry: Classes 5-8 Vehicles, reported that Class 8 truck orders surged 84% in May 2010 compared to last May.

More than half those orders are scheduled for delivery in the third quarter, ACT reports, suggesting­ fleets are looking to get those trucks into service before the busy fall shipping season.

Medium-dut­y orders grew 33% over May 2009, boosting year-to-da­te growth 18%, ACT reported.

Wabash verkauf 350 trailer! 6/23/2010  FFE Orders 350 ArcticLite­ Reefers From Wabash

Frozen Food Express Industries­ has tapped Wabash National Corporatio­n to produce 350 new ArcticLite­ refrigerat­ed van trailers by September.­

"We're excited to continue our long-stand­ing relationsh­ip with Wabash National and to provide our customers with the most up-to-date­, state-of-t­he-art equipment,­" said Russell Stubbs, president of FFE.

This is the third big order recently for Wabash. The company announced a three-year­ deal with truckload carrier Swift Transporta­tion, where Wabash will build 3,100 DuraPlate HD dry vans. In April, refrigerat­ed carrier Prime Inc. asked the company to build 4,000 ArcticLite­ refrigerat­ed van trailers over the next 34 months.
