John Kaiser John Kaiser's Tips for Escaping the Resource Sector Swamp Alive

Namibia Rare Earth...A key aspect of the PEA is the plan to have separation done by parties with that capacity outside of China. One of these is Solvay SA (SOLB:NYSE; SOLB:BRU), whose subsidiary Rhodia has a facility in France with surplus separation capacity. The other would be Molycorp, which has potential to develop heavy rare earth separation capacity at its facility in Estonia...

More News Shortly The key points here are that, 1) the facility at La Rochelle is only operating at about 30% of their full capacity, 2) the Chinese will only sell Solvay/ Rhodia REE feed stock if they promise to process this within China at their fully capitalized facilities there that employ a very significant number of Chinese laborers, 3) the facility in La Rochelle is set up to process (as are the facilities in China) only the minerals we are hosted by, and 4) we may be the only project that can supply the right kind of feed stock for their facility for the next several hundred years.

We are very hopeful that the current investigation by Rhodia about our feed stock – inputting our data into their software – will yield a positive result, that is that they can process our material through to the final REE end products that the Rohstoffallianz wants to buy from us.

The Rare Earth Market Evolves The Rare Earth Market Evolves
Posted on October 15, 2014 by Jon Hykawy

A good example of one such supporter of the space is the German Rohstoffallianz. The RA was formed by a consortium of German business to help secure supplies of certain critical materials, rare earths among them. But the criteria that are likely to be applied by strategic investors like the German RA are likely very different from those applied by financial investors to select the ideal rare earth project.

We believe that a likely list of such criteria would include the following:

Near-term production. At minimum the project must be capable of completing its DFS or engineering study in 2015. That puts it on track to be producing at nameplate capacity before 2020, which includes the effect of what will probably be a two year-long production ramp.
Long mine life, at least 20 years and preferably more than 30. There is no point in spending money to supply a necessary amount of REO for only 5 years.
A necessary level of output of the (truly) critical rare earths.  To me, the critical rare earths are the magnet materials, not yttrium.  If anyone cared about yttrium, it wouldn’t sell at the low price that it does.  There must be a sufficient output, not in percentages but in tonnes, of neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium.  Yes, I do believe that dysprosium use as a percentage of magnet mass will decrease, but dysprosium use won’t decline to zero, it is always going to be cheap insurance against demagnetization.
The project must be located in a region of geopolitical stability. If you are building a project to supply industry for 20 or 30 years, stability means STABILITY. If I had to look for good projects outside of areas like North America, Western Europe and Australia, I would, but there are enough rare earth projects around that I don’t.  So that’s where a supplier to a group like the RA is likely to be located.
Robust economics. If a project is going to be a long-term supplier, it has to be able to weather a sustained period of low prices.  My previously published REO price deck was intended to show how low prices could go if sufficient supply entered the market to saturate demand for almost all the elements.  If a project can generate positive cash flow with that deck, it can take the worst that the future rare earth market can dish out.
Almost non-existent remaining technical and social acceptance risks. If the project clears all the above hurdles, then it has to possess a simple, preferably proven flow sheet, and there should be almost zero potential for there to be social resistance to the new mine.

Allg. Ausblick Tantal/Niob Preise Tantalum: Market Outlook to 2016
In the period to 2016, the tantalum market will swing from undersupply to oversupply and probably back again.  Market and contract prices may have further to fall in the short-term, before returning to 2012 levels mid-decade.

http://www.roskill.com/reports/minor-and-light-metals/tantalum

Niobium: Market Outlook to 2017, 12th edition
Demand for niobium is driven by two sets of factors. One is the overall growth in the global economy, which directly influences the demand for steel, where most niobium is used, and the demand for aerospace superalloys, which are the largest non-steel market. Future demand for niobium will follow the overall economic trend, at the very least. The other factor is the incidence of use in steel, which could be the principal driver of structural increases in demand in the coming years.

In some countries, typically the traditional industrial economies, the use of niobium in steel is long-established and the incidence of use is already high.  In some other countries, however, there is considerable latent demand. This latter group includes China, India and Russia. Such countries have an incidence of niobium use that is currently far below the global average. They also have the highest forecast rates of growth in steel production and there is an anticipation that they will increasingly move from producing mild steel to HSLA steel. This is the growth area for niobium demand.

Tasman ruft Umweltproteste in Schweden hervor Protesters Chain Themselves to Tasman Drills
Hattip Rare Earthy
Can anyone tell me more about this? I've recently invested in Tasman, but was shocked to see this story over the past few days.

http://sverigesradio.se/sida/...px?programid=2054&artikel=5920367

It says that Norra Karr is very close to one of the largest lakes in Sweden, and protesters are chaining themselves to Tasman drill equipment in order to block the development. Seems like a PR nightmare.

Read more at http://www.stockhouse.com/companies/bullboard/...#PaZqoBAlXpJpFykT.99

"This destruction of the environment must stop," a person at the scene told P4 Jönköping.

One of the demonstrators said that they are concerned that the drilling will affect the safety of the water in the region.

The activist group calls itself Kolonierna (the colonies) and one of the demonstrators, Mose, who did not want to give his last name, said that they have been sitting on the drill since 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

"We are hoping that this will lead to a reasonable discussion about the mines," Mose said to newspaper Smålandsnytt.

Tasman Metals CEO Henning Holmström is taking the protest calmly.

"It is naturally disappointing, but at the same time it is expected. Bu the test drilling has been ongoing for two weeks already, so one can say that the guests have come too late to the party," Holmström said.

Holmström also said that they are now not doing exploration drilling, but for environmental surveys, done in conjunction with tests for ground water among others.

"One can see it as a bit ironic, that environmental activists are protesting against environmental surveying," Holmström said.

Around ten police officers were on the scene earlier, but all of them have since left. Police have not received a complaint from the mining company and the occupied machine was not planned to be used today.
