News 05.02.2007 Volunteers Selected for Human Clinical Trial of Generex Biotechnology's Synthetic Avian Influenza Vaccine
Monday February 5, 7:25 am ET

TORONTO--(MARKET WIRE)--Feb 5, 2007 -- Generex Biotechnology Corporation (NasdaqCM:GNBT - News) announced today that 50 volunteers have been selected and final preparations made for initiation of human clinical trials of the synthetic avian influenza vaccine under development by its wholly owned subsidiary, Antigen Express, Inc. The Company previously entered into an agreement with the Lebanese-Canadian Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon to conduct the Phase I trial. An additional 70 prospective volunteers are presently being screened by the Hospital. An aggregate of 160 patients are expected to participate in the trial.

Antigen Express has pioneered the development of a novel peptide vaccine technology for both therapeutic and prophylactic purposes. The technology has particular advantages for use against the potentially pandemic H5N1 avian influenza virus in that a peptide vaccine could be made in much larger amounts, more rapidly, and less expensively than the more traditional egg-based vaccine. Currently, it would be possible to vaccinate only a small fraction of the US population, let alone the world, using the traditional egg-based vaccine in the event of a pandemic.

The technology being developed by Antigen Express entails modification of a small fragment of the hemagglutinin protein from the H5N1 virus to more potently stimulate CD4+ T helper cells. The antigen-specific stimulation of T helper cells has been shown to be crucial in establishing immunity to foreign agents. This type of T helper stimulation is expected to augment the activity, and hence number of people, that could be immunized with a traditional egg-based vaccine as well as to protect against the lethality of the H5N1 virus when used alone.

Antigen Express-modified vaccine peptides have been developed for a variety of indications and shown good activity both in preclinical and clinical studies. The most advanced of these is a peptide designed to elicit an immunological response against the HER-2/neu oncoprotein which is expressed by breast cancer cells as well as by a variety other types of cancer cells. That peptide, in clinical trials since April of 2005, has been shown to be safe, well-tolerated and produced the desired antigen-specific stimulation of T helper cells in breast cancer patients.

H5N1 in Pakistan 06.02.2007 New outbreaks of deadly bird flu in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistan has reported its first cases of deadly bird flu in almost a year after finding the virus in small flocks of chickens and peacocks.

All the chickens in a flock of about 40 birds at a house in Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, had died or been killed after the H5N1 virus was detected, said Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry spokesman Mohammad Afzal on Tuesday.

"The virus was found in domestic poultry in Rawalpindi. Eighteen birds died and tests confirmed they were infected with H5N1 virus, the rest of the birds were then slaughtered," he told AFP.

Vogelgrippe Virus H5N1 in Laos 20.02.2007 HANOI (AFP) - A new outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu virus has been detected in Laos in the first such case in nearly seven months, according to Lao authorities.

Presence of the virus was confirmed after 112 birds were found dead in the village of Nonesavang not far from the capital Vientiane, foreign ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy said.

Around 1,000 birds in the village were to be culled and the transport of birds was banned in the immediate vicinity, the spokesman said.

The last outbreak in the communist country was announced in July. There has not been any known human case in Laos of bird flu, which has killed more than 160 people worldwide since an outbreak in Asia in 2003

Vogelgrippe Virus H5N1 in Pakistan 20.02.2007 ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Four peacocks and a goose have died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in the only zoo in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, an Agriculture Ministry official said on Tuesday.

"We conducted tests and they were all positive for H5N1," Mohammad Afzal, livestock commissioner at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, told Reuters.

It was the fourth case of the H5N1 strain of bird flu detected in Pakistan this year. The strain was first found in poultry last year and about 40,000 birds were culled.

It reappeared in poultry this month on a small farm near Islamabad.

Authorities had closed down the Marghazar Zoo and health officials were conducting screening tests and taking measures to ensure it did not spread, said a spokesman for the city administration, which runs the zoo.

"The zoo has been closed for the public as a precautionary measure. It will be reopened once all tests are completed," said the spokesman, Hayat Khan.

Vogelgrippe Virus H5N1 nahe Moskau 20.02.2007 MOSCOW (AFP) - The H5N1 bird flu virus has been confirmed at three additional Moscow region sites, bringing the total number of cases since Saturday to five.

"In the three cases that were found this weekend in Taldom, Naro-Fominsk and Podolsk, the virus H5N1 has been found," said Alexei Alexeyenko, a veterinary spokesman for agricultural agency Rosselkhoznadzor.

They would know in two days whether the virus was the most dangerous Asian strain, potentially fatal to humans who come into contact with infected birds, which has already been found at two other sites in the area, he added Tuesday.

It was first confirmed on Saturday evening at two farms at Odintsovo and Domodedovo, both of which are within 50 kilometres (30 miles) of the capital.

Among the three new confirmed contaminations, Podolsk is 40 km south of Moscow, Naro-Fominsk is 70 km south, and Taldom is 110 km to the north.

It is the first time there has been an outbreak near the Russian capital, which is home to more than 10 million people.

But veterinary and health officials have insisted that quarantines, disinfections and other precautionary measures have brought the outbreak under control.

The virus, which has killed 164 worldwide as of last month, has been traced to a bird market on the southeast fringe of Moscow where many local farmers buy chickens.

Prosecutors are investigating how the infected birds were allowed to be sold in violation of veterinary regulations.

MSN.Money empfehlt GNBT MSN.Money empfehlt seine 5 Aktien-Favoriten unter 5 Dollar zum Kauf, darunter auch Generex Biotech. Untenstehend der Artikel.

Generex Biotechnology (GNBT, news, msgs) is a speculative bird-flu play, but don’t let that ruffle your feathers. The company has several potential product lines, and insiders bought the stock again in March at $3.22. I’ll take that as a sign the company’s two main areas of research -- vaccines and a novel drug delivery platform -- hold promise.

Generex develops synthetic vaccines made from proteins that are tweaked to look like a virus. They are close enough to trick the body into thinking it has been exposed to the real deal, so they ready the immune system for an attack. But the designer proteins won’t kill people -- like real vaccines can.

Another advantage is that the proteins can be made faster than normal vaccines. "This allows you to inoculate large numbers of people very quickly," says Anna Gluskin, the company's chairman and chief executive. That could come in handy if we ever need a big supply of bird-flu vaccine in a hurry. Generex is developing designer vaccines to fight HIV, skin cancer and breast cancer.

Generex also has a user-friendly drug delivery system that lets patients spray an aerosol version of medications into their mouths. The trick is that compounds in the spray block the breakdown of drug molecules long enough for the membrane inside the mouth to absorb them. The delivery platform, called "RapidMist," is already approved in Ecuador as a way to take insulin. Generex’s oral insulin spray is called Oral-lyn.

Oral-lyn is still two years or so away from approval in major markets like the U.S., Canada and Europe. But Generex has $43 million in cash and a modest cash burn rate of about $1.8 million per quarter. A partnership with a bigger drug company could juice the stock before Oral-lyn hits a major market. RapidMist may also be deployed to deliver other medications, such as morphine.

Vogelgrippe H5N1 breitet sich aus in Russalnd Russia finds bird flu in new region, suspects more

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia confirmed another outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of bird flu, potentially dangerous to humans, on a farm in a southern region on Wednesday and suspects two more outbreaks on farms near Moscow.

Alexei Alexeyenko, spokesman for animal and plant health watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor, said the H5N1 strain was identified in the republic of Adygeya, a region in the North Caucasus.

Bird deaths also have been registered at farms in Dmitrov district, part of Moscow region, and Borovsk district in the Kaluga region, which borders the Moscow region to the south.

Alexeyenko said he expected confirmation of the presence of the virus in these regions within the next two days.

"It looks like it's H5N1 again, as the pattern appears to be the same as in the previous cases," he said.

Outbreaks of H5N1 have so far been confirmed in Moscow's Sadovod pet market and in five districts of the Moscow region -- Domodedovo, Odintsovo, Podolsk, Naro-Fominsk and Taldom.

Alexeyenko said he expected confirmation before the end of Wednesday that H5N1 was responsible for outbreaks identified earlier in two more districts of the Moscow region -- Volokolamsk and Ramenskoye.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry said in a statement that 1,500 domestic fowl had been culled since February 9 to prevent the spread. Another 333 birds have died of the virus.

Health officials have traced all the Moscow region outbreaks to birds bought in the last two weeks at the Sadovod market, commonly known as "Ptichka," or "Birdie."

The Moscow region outbreaks are Russia's second instance of bird flu this year and the first so close to the capital. The third area affected, Adygeya, is surrounded entirely by the southern region of Krasnodar, where H5N1 killed poultry in three settlements last month in the country's first 2007 outbreak.

No human cases of bird flu have been recorded in Russia. People who have been in contact with the dead birds have been checked, but none have shown any sign of falling ill.

The virus has killed 167 people worldwide since 2003, mostly in Asia and in cases where the victims had been in direct contact with infected birds. A total 274 cases have been recorded in humans.

Health experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily between humans, sparking a pandemic that could kill millions. Five people have died from eight cases in Azerbaijan, which borders Russia to the south.

H5N1 verbreitet in Russland - Stand 22.02.2007 MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian authorities suspect bird flu cases that have emerged in recent days have spread further following poultry deaths in the nearby region of Kaluga, the state veterinary service said Wednesday.

"Pathological samples are currently being examined and we are trying to determine where the birds were purchased, but all cases are similar to those discovered earlier in the Moscow region," Russian veterinary services spokesman Alexei Alexeyenko told Interfax press agency.

The H5N1 strain of bird flu has already been confirmed in several districts in the Moscow region, where some 333 farm birds have died, according to the Russian emergencies ministry.

The most dangerous Asian strain of H5N1, potentially fatal to humans who come into contact with infected birds, has been confirmed at two sites in the Moscow area.

The authorities have determined that at least a portion of the contaminated birds were bought at Moscow's bird market.

Vogelgrippe H5N1 in Afghanistan 22.02.2007 Afghanistan to slaughter birds after suspected H5N1 cases Wed Feb 21, 3:11 PM ET

KABUL (AFP) -        Afghanistan will slaughter birds in areas where two cases of bird flu are suspected of being the H5N1 strain that is potentially fatal to humans, the Food and Agriculture Organisation said.

The cases were in turkeys in the city of Jalalabad and in the province of Kunar, FAO information officer Assadullah Azhari told AFP. Both areas are close to Pakistan, which has this year confirmed more cases of H5N1.

The birds were found to have the H5 virus, he said. "It is not 100 percent confirmed but our technical staff say there is a danger it could be the N1 as well, according to their experience," Azhari said.

Birds were to be slaughtered in both areas from Thursday to contain the disease, he said.

Afghanistan has also banned poultry imports from Pakistan, because of its outbreaks of H5N1.

There were confirmed cases of the H5N1 virus in birds in Afghanistan last year, but not in humans.
