XPeng's transformation into a broader technology group has moved beyond corporate branding. Following its official rebranding to "XPeng Group" on April 1, 2026, the company has swiftly unveiled a major technological initiative that underscores its new direction.
A Premium Focus to Counter Industry Headwinds
This strategic push comes in direct response to intense margin pressure across China's automotive sector. Industry data for the first two months of 2026 revealed an average profit margin of just 2.9%, a significant challenge XPeng aims to sidestep through product differentiation. CEO He Xiaopeng has reinforced that vehicles priced below 100,000 CNY are no longer a target. The company's path forward is centered on AI-defined, premium offerings.
The P7+ model exemplifies this strategy. It forgoes LiDAR technology, opting instead for a camera-based system integrated with an 800-volt silicon carbide platform. This combination is engineered to optimize both cost and performance—a crucial lever amid European tariff pressures and broader trade policy uncertainties.
The Core of the Offensive: Tianji AIOS 6.1.0
On April 5, XPeng commenced the full rollout of its Tianji AIOS 6.1.0 software update. This release introduces the second generation of its VLA driving system, which is designed to set new benchmarks, particularly in complex urban environments.
Key capabilities now include autonomous navigation through both main and secondary roads without requiring pre-mapped routes. Enhanced algorithms provide more reliable detection of irregular obstacles, such as suddenly opening car doors or pedestrians at night. The update is being deployed across several current models, including the P7+, G9, G6 Ultra, and the extended-range G7 series.
The Long-Term Vision for 2030
Looking ahead, XPeng's management anticipates a period of intense consolidation in the Chinese auto market. Their projection suggests that by 2030, only five dominant manufacturers will remain. To secure a position among them, the company believes producing electric vehicles alone will be insufficient.
Consequently, XPeng Group is positioning itself within a wider smart mobility ecosystem. Strategic investments in areas like humanoid robotics and flying vehicles signal its ambition to be more than just an automaker, preparing for a future where intelligent transportation takes multiple forms.
