The company has set an aggressive timeline for this expansion. Rigetti aims to break the 1,000-qubit barrier within the next three to four years. Looking further ahead, the firm is targeting what it calls "TeraQuOp" status—capable of one trillion quantum operations—by the year 2035. These milestones are viewed as critical for transitioning from experimental setups to fault-tolerant computers capable of handling complex industrial-scale problems.

A key technological component for achieving these performance leaps is Rigetti's proprietary chiplet architecture. This approach is expected to deliver a substantial boost in computational power, with a particular emphasis on enhancing error correction capabilities, a fundamental challenge in the field.

The selection of the United Kingdom as the launchpad for this effort is strategically deliberate. It aligns with the UK government's commitment to quantum technology, which includes a national strategy backed by up to £2 billion for quantum infrastructure development.

Rigetti is not starting from scratch in the region. The company has already established a foothold with a smaller 36-qubit system installed at the UK's National Quantum Computing Centre.
