PayPal's Pivotal Earnings Test Amid a High-Profile Bet

All eyes are on PayPal Holdings Inc. as it prepares to report first-quarter results on May 5. This will be the inaugural earnings release under new CEO Enrique Lores, coming months after the company withdrew its medium-term financial targets for 2027. The pressure is palpable, with analysts forecasting earnings per share of $1.27 for the quarter.

The upcoming report arrives against a backdrop of significant investor intrigue. Michael Burry, the investor famed for predicting the 2008 housing collapse, has placed a notable bet on the payments giant. His firm, Scion Asset Management, allocated roughly 3.5 percent of its portfolio to PayPal shares at an entry price of $49.375. Burry’s core thesis is that the stock’s decline represents a technically driven sell-off rather than a fundamental repricing, and he ranks PayPal at the top of his list of software and payments companies, just ahead of Fiserv and Adobe. He anticipates a long-term annualized return exceeding 15 percent.

This high-profile vote of confidence helped lift the stock by over twelve percent in a single week. Yet, the broader picture remains challenging. Trading around $46, the share price is still nearly 36 percent below its 52-week high and down roughly 13 percent since the start of the year. From its five-year peak, the stock remains about 83 percent lower.

Operational headwinds persist. Consensus estimates point to tepid revenue growth of just under three percent, with earnings per share projected to decline in 2026. In response, management has declared 2026 an "investment year" while simultaneously announcing a massive $6 billion share buyback program—equivalent to approximately 14 percent of the current market capitalization. This aggressive capital return is designed to support per-share earnings even if top-line growth stagnates.

CEO Lores recently outlined his strategic vision at the "PayPal Beyond" event in San Francisco, signaling a shift from pure growth to operational efficiency and AI integration. A key initiative involves leveraging data from PayPal's 439 million active accounts to boost conversion rates for merchants. The company is also pursuing growth through specific projects: its Venmo platform is expanding a cashback program offering up to five percent refunds at select retailers, while integrating Brazil's popular Pix instant payment system for small and medium-sized businesses. Brazil's digital commerce market is projected to reach nearly $1 trillion by the end of 2026.

Simultaneously, speculation is mounting about potential activist investor involvement. Research firm Gordon Haskett has pointed to unusual patterns in regulatory filings from SG Americas, a pattern often associated with swap constructions used by activists to build anonymous positions. The analyst noted it would not be surprising if one of the usual suspects already had PayPal in its sights. The company offers clear angles for activism, having surprised markets with a CEO change in February, delivered disappointing quarterly results, and withdrawn its 2027 targets amid reports of takeover interest.

Adding another layer of complexity, a deadline passed today for lead plaintiffs to join an ongoing class-action lawsuit. The suit alleges the company made misleading statements about the effectiveness of its sales organization, overstating its ability to move customers to new products.

The Mizuho securities firm recently downgraded the stock to "Neutral," citing the planned "X Money" super-app project, which aims to attract up to 600 million users. The average analyst price target sits around $48, just above Burry's entry point but well above the current trading level. For the stock to overcome persistent sell-side skepticism, the upcoming quarterly numbers must demonstrate tangible progress. The market will be watching closely for transaction margin growth, which posted a six percent increase in the prior-year period, and for signs that the core branded checkout business is regaining momentum.
