A Period of Significant Change Looms for the MSCI World ETF

MSCI World ETF Aktie

Investors in the iShares MSCI World ETF are approaching a critical juncture, with two major structural events poised to significantly reshape the composition of the global benchmark index by early summer 2026. Beyond a fundamental methodological overhaul, a potential mega-initial public offering threatens to further amplify the already substantial dominance of US equities within the fund.

A Competitive Landscape and Geopolitical Tensions

Away from portfolio composition, the iShares fund faces pressure on another front: cost. Competition in the ETF market is increasingly being fought on the basis of fees. Rival Invesco reduced its management fee to just 0.05% in early April. With a total expense ratio of 0.24%, the iShares ETF appears expensive in direct comparison, a point recently highlighted by rating agency Morningstar. Despite this, institutional investor loyalty remains, exemplified by the Royal Bank of Canada, which recently increased its position by approximately two million shares.

The fund's core portfolio remains heavily weighted toward technology. More than a quarter of the ETF's assets are allocated to this sector, led by its largest single holding, Nvidia, followed by Apple and Microsoft. This very concentration presents risks in the current trade policy environment. The dominant tech firms source critical components from Asia and are sensitive to tariff impositions. Although the US Supreme Court struck down so-called "Liberation Day" tariffs in February, triggering billion-dollar refunds, the US administration is already planning new trade barriers while China prepares retaliatory measures. Analysts fear this conflict could reignite global inflation and directly compress the profit margins of the index's largest constituents.

Dual Catalysts for Portfolio Turnover

Simultaneously, another major event is developing. SpaceX confidentially filed for a June IPO in early April. With a targeted valuation of $1.75 trillion, the aerospace company would immediately join the ranks of the ten most valuable publicly traded corporations. Should SpaceX meet the criteria for accelerated index inclusion, billions in passive capital would flow into the stock. This would further cement the already strong US weighting within the fund and trigger significant sector shifts.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MSCI World ETF?

Separately, and independent of daily market fluctuations, MSCI will implement a deep change to its own methodology in May. The calculation basis for a company's freely tradable share portion, known as the Free Float, will be fundamentally restructured. This seemingly technical adjustment has tangible consequences. It is expected to noticeably shift the weighting of individual mega-cap stocks and result in a significantly higher portfolio turnover than the routine review conducted in March.

Upcoming Distributions and a Reprieve

The impending portfolio adjustments lead directly into the next distribution phase. Following the methodological realignment in May and the potential SpaceX IPO in June, the next ex-dividend date is set for June 15, 2026. This comes after a strong year where the fund's dividend growth exceeded 20% year-over-year.

At least one looming burden was avoided. MSCI abandoned its plan to eject companies with large cryptocurrency holdings from the index. This decision prevented forced sales worth billions of dollars.
